A & B Class Fire Doors

Fire resistant doors are a vital component of fire safety on ships and offshore platforms as they are designed to resist the spread of fire and smoke between compartments.

Their primary function is to provide a barrier that delays fire for a specified duration, allowing more time for evacuation and firefighting efforts.

They are classified based on their fire resistance and location within the vessel/platform and by understanding the different types of fire doors, their classifications and compliance requirements, ship operators can enhance onboard safety and adhere to international regulations.

P.N. Erichsen offers a wide selection of A60 and A30 fire rated doors as well as B30 cabin doors.

We cooperate with ISO:9001 certified European manufacturers and all products we offer are fire-tested and certified according to SOLAS and IMO standards and can be supplied with EC/MED and USCG certificates

All doors are custom built according to our customers’ wishes for design, dimensions and equipment.

The material is steel or stainless steel and the doors can be delivered as either a single door, double door or sliding door and available options such as panic bar, window/porthole, door pump, Euro lock cylinder, etc.

The surface of both frame and door leaf can be painted in a desired RAL color and stainless steel doors can be supplied in blank steel.

The doors are easy to install, and the frame is available for bolting or welding.

The two main categories of doors are:

A-Class fire doors

A-Class fire doors are categorized into A-60, A-30, A-15, and A-0, depending on their fire resistance time in minutes.

A-Class doors provide high fire resistance and are constructed using steel or other equivalent materials.

Their key characteristics include:

Able to withstand fire for up to 60 minutes.

Prevents flame and smoke passage while limiting temperature rise on the unexposed side.

Common locations are engine rooms, stairwells, accommodation spaces, and bulkheads separating critical areas.

B-Class fire doors

B-Class doors offer moderate fire resistance and are commonly found in areas requiring a lower fire rating.

They are categorized into B-30 and B-15, based on fire resistance duration.

Their key characteristics include:

Typically withstands fire for 30 minutes.

Made of approved non-combustible materials, often with insulation to prevent excessive heat transfer.

Common locations are crew accommodation areas, corridors, and galley spaces.

In addition to the standard classifications, ships may be equipped with specialized fire doors designed for specific functions:

Watertight Fire Doors:

These doors are mainly used in bulkhead divisions where both fire and water ingress must be prevented. These doors are essential for maintaining the integrity of the ship in case of flooding while also serving as a fire barrier.

Sliding Fire Doors:

These automatic or semi-automatic doors are commonly used in high-risk areas like engine rooms. Sliding fire doors are designed to close automatically when a fire is detected, preventing the spread of flames and smoke without manual intervention.

Self-Closing Fire Doors:

Many fire doors are equipped with self-closing mechanisms to ensure they remain shut unless actively held open. This feature is critical in maintaining the division of compartments in the event of a fire.

All these door types are of course also included in our product range
